48 Govt School Teachers honoured at eGuru – Awards 2006

Directorate of Education, AP and NIIT’s unique initiative to promote ICT in teaching

Hyderabad, September 09, 2006:  Saluting the ‘Gurus’ for their unflinching spirit of imparting education, NIIT, Asia’s largest IT Trainer, in association with the Directorate of School Education of Government of Andhra Pradesh, today honoured 48 teachers at eGuru Awards 2006.

In line with their joint effort of promoting IT and IT assisted education at the school level and promoting use of ICT in learning and teaching at schools, NIIT had organised an online contest designed to involve the teachers and invoke their creative and efficient use of Internet in teaching.

Dr. P Krishnaiah, Education Secretary, Govt. of AP, gave away the awards to the winners of the contest. NIIT received over 5000 entries as part of this contest and a jury panel headed by Mr Sheshagiri Rao, Retd. Director, SCERT, Andhra Pradesh selected 3 winners from each of the 15 districts of the state and three winners at the state level. Mr S Balasubramanyam, IAS, Director of School Education, Govt of AP also joined in honouring these teachers with e-skills.

Distributing prizes to the 48 teachers, whose entries were adjudged the best in the competition, Dr. P Krishnaiah underscored the important role of Information and Communication Technologies in shaping the future of next generation in this emerging knowledge era. The first prize went to Jhansi Laxmi of AP Social Welfare Residential School, village Subhash Nagar, Karimnagar; Hari Haranadh MPL High School, village Kancherapalam, Vishakhapatnam, got the second prize, while B Shameer Khan of AP Residential School, village Kodiganhalli, Anantapur, won the third prize.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. K. Rajendra Prasad, General Manager, NIIT said, “We are delighted by the overwhelming response to this initiative. It is encouraging and heartening to see that teachers today are keeping in step with the changing technology and are using it innovatively to teach young school children. We at NIIT believe that computer education not only helps raise the standard of education in school, it also increases life standards”.

Mr. S. Balasubramanyam, Director of School Education, AP government, highlighted the state government’s effort in promoting computer education at the school level. 

Since 2002 NIIT, in association with the state government, has been offering computer education in 663 government schools equipping these institutions with cutting-edge infrastructure and offering specialised training to empower young girls and boys with crucial IT skills.
